What is the meaning of the name coatimundi?
The name coatimundi, which means "loan coati" in Guarani, refers to the solitary lifestyle of the male. He joins a band of females with their young for a very short time to mate with the females; he then leaves the band to continue his life alone until the next mating season.

 
In what geographic areas do coatimundis live?
The coatimundi (coati for short) is a member of the racoon family (procindae) that lives in tropical forests ranging from the southwestern United States through Central America and into South America. 

 
Why is a coatimundi such a good tree climber?
The ankles of a coati are double jointed and extremely flexible, enabling the animal to descend trees head first!

 
What does a coatimundi like to eat?
The coatimundi is an omnivore, enjoying a diet of both animals (invertibrates, such as beetles, scorpions, earthworms) and plants (fruits, nuts, tubers).
