Shaping the land: Constructive and Destructive Forces

In this activity you will learn about the different forces that affect landforms.

This activity will be done in small groups of 3-4 students as instructed by your teacher. Your teacher will assign different roles to each student (note taker, investigator and observer). She will instruct you when to swap roles. Next your teacher will (while exploring the following website: http://www.springfield.k12.il.us/movie/landforms/index.html) help you complete the following activities:

      1. Standard water stream table investigation: pour water using sand in the stream table and look at the change in the landforms

      2. Sloped water stream table investigation: raise the table using the blocks and observe how the water flows and at the change in the landforms.

      3. Next replace the sand with clay, followed by hay, pine needles and paper

      4. Now construct a dam using pebbles and see how the flow of water affects the flow of land.

      5. Complete the worksheet (at the following website: http://school.discovery.com/quizzes32/mbanajee/8thgrade1.html) as you are doing the experiment. Your teacher will print and provide you with a copy of the worksheet.

Items needed to make a stream table:

  • Stream table box
  • 1/2 gallon capacity watering can
  • plastic protractor
  • pail
  • wooden or plastic blocks
  • mop
  • towels
  • different types of soil (i.e., sand, dirt, clay)
  • different types of mulch such as hay, pine needles, shredded newsprint or paper
  • small pebbles to construct a dam

NOTE: Larger stream tables are more dramatic, but the volume of materials needed to fill them increases greatly with size.

Landform Blog - Student Questionnaire:

A questionnaire is used to evaluate the progress of the students and the curriculum web.

The students have access to the blog after each unit so that they are able to voice their likes/dislikes or understanding/confusion as they go through the webquest.
