This unit will last for two-three weeks beginning with Indians, then Pilgrims, and ending with comparison and contrast of both cultures. The last week I will be looking at gathering and possessing/organizing information about past events and people (Native Americans “Indians”). I will also allow my students to interact with the computer not only and information source but also an organizing and processing source. . Description of Instructional and Learning ActivitiesResearch and Symbol/Cultural ActivitiesLessons will last for one hour with 15 minute intervals (teacher instruction, web browsing, PowerPoint interaction, and Cultural Activities and Artifacts. Students will split up into 3 groups that travel around the room to different sites. The centers will be Center A web-browsing, Center B– PowerPoint and Center C– Cultural Activities that allow student to create authentic artifacts. These include the following: -Tipi-Students will paint pictures and make a model of a Plains Indian tipi -Clay pot- Students will make a clay pot that Southwest Indians might have used -Totem Pole-students will use paper towel/toilet tissue holders to make miniature replications of a Totem Pole used by the Northwest Coastal Indians-Indian and PilgrimVillage/Blocks –Students role-play build out of a wooden log setWe will also use books. Maps, and posters that are dispersed throughout the room.
