Fluid/Blood Resuscitation

ANES 521:  Principles of Anesthesia Practice I

The class will be divided into 6 groups with 5 participants each.  Each group is to formulate a plan for fluid resuscitation based on the patient’s volume status, physical condition, and type of surgery.  A narrative should follow that discusses and justifies the patient’s unique fluid management plan.  To complete this task, each group must complete the following:

1. Review “Resource” material on the web.

2. Search for additional information in the form of “Guidelines for Practice” on the web.   Search major medical center web sites for trauma fluid replacement guidelines.  Include these sites in your final report to share with classmates.

3. Review and discuss the case history.  Complete the management form with the patient information.

4. Create a unique, patient-specific fluid/blood replacement plan.

5. Write a narrative justifying the amount and type of fluid replacement for the patient.  Include in the narrative any reasons for deviating from the calculated amounts.

6. Present findings in class and debate fluid management plans with classmates.
