EDUCATION OF THE ACADEMICALLY GIFTED

EDCI 7760 - Nature and Needs of the Gifted and Talented  (3 hours)
    offered in Fall:  Historical perspective, social, emotional, and educational characteristics; administrative considerations;
                            major sociological and psychological studies; special populations of gifted and talented students.

EDCI 7761 - Curricular Theories and Methods of Teaching the Gifted and Talented  (3 hours) (Prereq.: EDCI 7760)
    offered in Spring:  An examination of curricular theories, materials, and teaching strategies for planning appropriate learning
                            experiences for the gifted and talented, with emphasis upon the development and evaluation of educational
                            plans for individuals and groups.

EDCI 7762 - Creative Behavior  (3 hours)
    offered in Spring:  The nature and analysis of creative behavior; the appraisal and implementation of specific processes
                            designed to encourage creative productivity

EDCI 7307 - Topics in Curriculum and Instruction:  Techniques of Counseling the Gifted  (3 hours)
    offered in Fall

EDCI 5880 - Special Topics in Education.(1-3 hours; max. 9 credits)(Prereq.: consent of instructor)
    This course number is used for courses in gifted education that are offered intermittently as faculty perceive need or interest.
    Topics might include:
        Special Populations Among the Gifted and Talented
        Interpretation of Assessment Data of the Gifted
        Current Research in the Education of the Gifted

*******Fall 1999:  We will offer EDCI 5880 - Topics in Education: Special Populations of Gifted Students (3 hours)
        Characteristics an appropriate curricular adaptations for gifted students who are members of the following groups:
            Minorities, underachievers, the disabled, economically disadvantaged, and highly gifted.

EDCI 7768 - Practicum in Education for the Gifted  (3-6 hours)(Prereq.:  consent of instructor)
    Planning, implementing and evaluating strategies, materials, and counseling techniques in a school setting.

Guidelines for
Master's of Arts Degree in Curriculum & Instruction
Major:  Education

The MA Program in Curriculum and Instruction is 36 hours with two options:
    1.  36 hours of course work with a written comprehensive examination.
    2.  30 hours of course work and 6 hours of thesis with an oral examination.

All programs must be approved by the student's department advisor.  At least 18 hours must be at or above the 7000 level. (Transfer work from other institution may not be counted toward fulfilling this 18 hour requirement.)  A minimum of 6 hours must be taken outside the college of education.  All programs must include the following components.

3.  Area of Concentration (15-21 hours)
        Core Requirements:  Select one basic course that support emphasis:
            EDCI 4025, 4040, 7824, 7825, 7843, 7901, or approved equivalent.                                             3
        Concentration:  A number of concentrations are possible within the Department of
            Curriculum and Instruction.  A focus and coursework will be selected by joint agreement
            between student and advisor in consultation with other faculty members as needed.                            12-18

Guidelines for
Certificate of Education Specialist

        The program for the Certificate of Education Specialist (Ed.S) in Curriculum and Instruction requires a minimum of 60 credits beyond the bachelor's degree which includes a Master's degree.  A minimum of 18 hours of the last 24 hours must be taken for resident credit in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at LSU.  All programs must be approved by the student's departmental advisor.  A minimum of nine hours must be taken outside of the College of Education.  All programs must include the following components:

Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction
Department of Curriculum and Instruction

The Ph.D. program in Curriculum and Instruction requires (90) hours beyond the bachelor's, at least twelve of which are to be taken outside of the College of Education.

Each doctoral program will contain the following components:

Major Area of Study:  Curriculum and Instruction
Approximately fifty hours are to be taken in the student's area(s) of concentration (e.g., curriculum theory, reading, language arts, children's literature, and teacher education, early childhood/elementary/middle/secondary school education).  Each student must enroll in:
        A.  EDCI 7900 - Doctoral Orientation Seminar (1 hr. preferably early in the program)
        B.  EDCI 7901 - Curriculum Theory
        C.  EDCI 7904 - Education and Cognition
        D.  EDCI 7910 - Traditions of Inquiry in Curriculum and Instruction

Research Methodology and Dissertation Research
A minimum of twenty-one hours are to be taken, including:
    A.  Dissertation hours (EDCI 9000):  a minimum of twelve hours and a maximum of eighteen hours are to be taken within

          the 90-hour program.  (Additional hours may be taken beyond the 18 hours but cannot be used to satisfy the research
           requirement.)
    B.  Three research courses:  at least one each in quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and one in the student's choice.
         (Independent research courses or courses which review the literature in specific curriculum areas cannot be used to fulfill
         this requirement.)  Students may use courses from the list below or other courses approved by the major advisor,
         (EDAF 4249 may not be used to fulfill this requirement):

    Qualitative Methods Courses:
        ANTH 4090 - Ethnographic Methodology

            (EDCI students will be permitted to fulfill the prerequisite for the course (EDAF 7243) in one of the following ways:
                    1.  Complete EDAF 7241 as stated in the catalog.
                    2.  Complete EDAF 4006 or a comparable statistics course.)

Minor Area of Study (Optional):
    Approximately twelve to eighteen hours, or as required by the minor field, are to be taken.  At least one doctoral committee member must represent the minor field.
