Children of the Holocaust

Using fiction and nonfictin to get a child's view of WWII.
For the 5th or 6th grade classroom.




Introduction:
    This thematic unit will be an introduction to the events of World War II and the Holocaust through the child's perspective.

Subject Area: Language Arts

Learning Objectives:
    The students will gain a better understanding of the causes and effects of WWII from the prospective of the people who lived through it, by writing a letter as though they were that character.

Standards and Benchmarks:

Activity:
     The students will choose a novel, either Number the Stars or The Diary of Anne Frank, and create a letter from a character in one of the stories. The students will have to use details from the story in the letterr to show that there was an understanding of what was read. The students will write the letter using a word processing software, such as Microsoft Word. They will edit their work using this same program.

Assessment:
    The students will be evaluated on the quality of the letter and the accuracy and richness of the details of the letters in relation to the story. Rubric

Subject Area: Social Studies

Learning Objectives:
    The students will be able to recall the sequence of events from the Holocaust during WWII.

Standards and Benchmarks:


Activity:
    The students will research the events of the Holocaust using the following web sites:

     -- www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/holocaust/timeline.html
     -- http://history1900s.about.com/library/holocaust/bltimeline.htm
They will make a list of events that best goes along with their novel and create a timeline with this information using Timeliner. The events will include events from history and events from the book.

Assessment:
    The students will be evaluated on the quality of the timeline in relating it to their book. The timeline should include pictures, as well. Rubric

Subject Area: Art

Learning Objectives:
    Students will gain a better understanding of Jews art and symbols.

Standards and Benchmarks:

Activity:
    The students will use Jewish symbols and concepts of art to create a picture. These pictures created using Kidpixs and will be put into a slide show presentation. Then they will printed out to create a quilt for the classroom.

Assessment:
    The students will be evaluated on the quality of their art work. All will receive credit upon completion.
