As citizens of the United States of America it is important for you as students and the future of America to learn about our country's flag. In this lesson you will participate in a variety of activities that will help you become familiar with our flag's design, facts, and history about the flag. Your group will also create a classroom flag and learn how to properly fold a flag. Let's come together as a class of United States citizens and learn about an important symbol of our country.
The Task
Students will access the internet and complete the facts about the United States flag. Students will compile their flag facts and post them on their KWL chart, they will also post the facts on their five pointed star. After visiting the link on flag ettiquette, students will demonstrate the proper way to fold the flag. Brainstorm to create a classroom flag and write a short paragraph about our classroom flag.
The ProcessWith your group of four:
- draw and color the United States flag
- go to the KWL Worksheet and print it out
- discuss what you know about the American flag and record it on the KWL chart
- discuss what you would like to learn about the American flag and record it on the KWL chart
- visit "Betsy Ross' Home Page" on the Internet at: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/index.html
- write on your KWL chart a new fact that you learned about the flag
- George Washinton preferred a six point star, he thought they were easier to make. Betsy Ross showed him different. As a group make a five pointed star, follow the directions on Betsy's Home Page or go to this site http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/index.html
- on your KWL chart write at least one fact about your star
- as a group check out the information on flag folding by clicking on this site http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/index.html
- Using the classroom flag demonstrate as a group the proper way to fold the flag.
- After the entire class has properly folded the flag we will demonstrate the proper folding to the second graders.
- When we return from the second grade class we will brainstorm to create our own classroom flag and write a paragraph our classroom flag's design.
