Introduction

Did you like Greek mythology?  Did you wish you could be on the ship with Odysseus?  Now that we have read The Odyssey by Homer, it is now time to become a group of people from Odysseus' time period.   You will divide into groups of four and each member of the group will have a job to do.  We will be using the web to research various aspects of The Odyssey and the time period.  If you and your group members need to remember a certain Book of The Odyssey, click to  MythWeb

pick your role
In each group there are four different roles and each role has a different job to do.  Read each role carefully and decide which one would be best for you!!!

The Poet:

This person is responsible for gathering together all the other group members' research and writing a myth.  This myth can be performed in a skit or it can be read aloud by  the poet.
Odysseus:
You are the fearless leader that will lead your group members into the perilous sea of research. It is your responsiblity to encourage your group members through the rough times.  Also if there are any signs of mutiny, it is your job to remind your group members of the journey that they are on.
A god or
goddess:
Hail O Greek god or goddess!  Since you are the group's expert on Greek and goddesses, it is your job to inform your group members about a certain Greek god or goddess. Whoever you pick to represent your people, they will be one of the characters in the myth that your group writes.
The Critic:
You are the thumbs-up/thumbs-down critic.  Research various different myths that can be compared to Homer's Odyssey.  There are numerous different myths that can be compared to The Odyssey, such as Tolkien's work and even passages in the Bible.

process

Now how do we do this?  Each group member should pick a role from above.  Once each member has decided what role to play, it is time now to surf the the internet.  Below are links to certain sites that will have most of the information that you need.  Go to each site and take notes and remember to write down the address of the site.  After each member has gone to the websites and taken notes, it is now time for everyone to get back together with their group.  Here the creativity begins.  Using the information that you have collected on the internet, try to combine the information into a myth presentation.  Remember that the Poet is the one who must write the final myth, but all members of the group must contribute to the myth. The final myth presentation will be completed using a PowerPoint slide show.
