Title Food for Energy - Learning About the Four Food Groups
Subject and Grade Level Science/Health & Nutrition   /   designed for 4th grade
Student Characteristics Students will need to have basic knowledge using a scanner, Adobe Photo Deluxe software, Netscape Composer, and exploring the Internet.
Lesson Overview This lesson will allow students to research information concerning the food groups.  Students will create a presention using cut out pictures of food that have been matched to their corresponding food groups. It is important for students to be able to identify different food groups in order to maintain a healthy diet and eat proper servings from each food group.
Learning Objectives As a result of this lesson, the student will:
    - have an increased knowledge of major nutrients and the food groups
    - understand meaning of new vocabulary words ( proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, etc.)
    - be able to match foods with their correct food group
    - work cooperatively with other group members
    - display knowledge of using Adobe Photo Deluxe, scanners, Netscape Composer, and searching for information on the Internet
Time This lesson should take between 2 and 3 class periods to complete.

Activities & Procedures 1.  First, the class will be introduced to the activity through a class discussion about nutrition and foods.
2.  Students will then be assigned to a group.  Each group will have four members.
3.  Students will be instructed to search the Internet and focus on the above sites which contain
     information concerning the food groups.
4.  Once each group member has chosen a food group to focus on, they will compile information on
that particular food group to later share with their group members.
5.  After each food group has been researched, the group members will search through newspapers
and magazines for pictures of foods to place in each food group.
6.  The group members will cut the pictures of food out and scan them into the computer.  Students
will use Adobe Photo Deluxe software to resize and edit their pictures.
7.  The groups will then create a presentation using Netscape Composer containing the information they  found for each food group and
the pictures they scanned onto the computer.
8.  After all groups have completed creating their presentations, they will present their projects to their
classmates.  The class will participate in questions and discussion at this time.
9.  The presentations will be posted on the class website once they have been graded.
Assessment Students will receive a group grade for this project.  All group members will need to put as much input as possible into this project in order for it to be successful.  Rubric is as follows:

The foods we eat are broken up into four basic food groups.  Food produces energy in our bodies.  We need the energy that food produces to function.  Food contains various nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, and fats.  It is important to maintain a balanced diet and eat the proper servings of each food group daily.  Here are the four basic food groups:

1.)  THE MEAT GROUP -   This group consists of foods that contain lots of protein like meats,
poultry, dry beans, fish, eggs and nuts.  We should have 2-3 servings from this group daily.

2.)  THE GRAIN GROUP -   Breads, cereal, rice, and pasta fall under this category.   We should
eat 6-11 servings of this group daily.

3.)  THE DAIRY GROUP  - Milk, yogurt, and cheese are all dairy products.  This group gives us calcium. We need 2-3 servings
        of dairy products daily.

4.)  THE FRUIT & VEGETABLE GROUP - This food group is made up of all of the fruits and  vegetables in our diet.
This group gives our bodies vitamins and minerals.   We should eat 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruit daily.

* We cut pictures of different foods out of magazines, scanned them, and placed them in their appropriate food groups below  .
