Lesson Plan
Title: Introduction to Assistive Technology
Subjects: This will be a group of regular and special education
teachers working in the elementary schools of
Livingston Parish.
Lesson overview:

The teachers in this group do have, or will have, a student
using an assistive device in their classroom. For this
reason an explanation of what assistive technology is and
what role the teachers play in its development and implementation
should be helpful to them. The first part of this
presentation involves defining assistive technology and
how the need for this technology is determined. The
second part of the presentation will be an explanation and
demonstration of how the teachers, and their technology
facilitators, will incorporate these devices in the school
setting.

Learning objectives: 1) The teachers will understand the definition of assistive technology is.
2) The teachers will better understand how they
contribute in the process of determining what
devices will be used.
3) The teachers will have a better understanding how
the augmentative communication devices enhance a student's learning potential.
4) To answer some of the questions these teachers have
about assistive technology.
Time: Twenty-five minutes for the presentation and fifteen
minutes for a question and answer session.
Resources/materials: Desktop computer, LCD, sound system, slide show
created by presenter, Dynamyte and Dynavox
computers, handout packets containing: lists of
resource websites, flow chart of evaluation process, and
a list of school based resource personnel.
Procedures: The presenter will display the slide show on the LCD
while explaining elements of information pertaining to
each slide. The topic areas to be discussed are: a)
definition of assistive technology, b) who benefits from
this technology, c) who and how a decision on whether
the technology will be provided made.

The presenter will then introduce the Dynamyte and
Dynavox computers as examples of the type of
technology that might be employed by a student with
disabilities. She will then demonstrate how the
Dynavox software works by using a Dynavox connected
to the LCD and sound system. She will demonstrate the
functions of the buttons, tech talk capability, and ease of
programming. The presenter will roll play a discussion
of Jack and the Beanstalk. She will also demonstrate
some button functions on the
school page.

The presenter will summarize the information
presented with the slide show and encourage the
audience to ask questions on the topic.
At the end of the question and answer session, the
presenter will thank the audience for their attention,
and their interest in topic.
