Science and Social Studies for 5th and 6th grade students |
Students at the 5th and 6th grade level have a basic understanding of and experience with computers as well as the Internet. Students at this level are also capable of completing a lesson through guided instruction, namely a WebQuest lesson. Students are able to work efficiently and productively in small groups. |
Name That Disease is a lesson that will have students using their creative thinking to name a disease of their own creation and find a cure for the disease. The students will need to explore and investigate rare plants and flowers to determine which species is best suited to cure their disease. |
1. The students
will have a general knowledge of rare plants and flowers.
2. The students will have a general knowledge of some characteristics of the countries that surround us. 3. The students will have a stonger background in using database and researching on the Internet. |
Approximately 1 week of class time, class length being 45 minutes. |
The students will need access to a computer for successful completion of this lesson. The computer will need to be equipped with AppleWorks and with an Internet provider. |
1. Students will
be assigned a partner.
2. Partners will choose which type of rare species, whether it be plant or flower, they want to learn more about. 3. Partners will research their species on the Internet to find the information needed to complete their database (picture, genus and species, location, and general information). 4. Partners will choose a name for their disease, and originality is key. 5. Partners will describe their disease in detail, including how it will affect the population. 6. Partners will devise a way in which the species they chose will help cure the disease, including what they did to come up with the cure. 7. Once partners have gathered all the required information, they will create a database to present their project. Creativity is key! |
Students will present
their own personal understanding about the plant or flower species they
chose to investigate in the form of a database. The database must
contain the following five categories in this order: name of the disease,
picture of the rare plant or flower, the genus and species name, where
the species is found, and information about the species and disease chosen
(for example: what the disease is, how the species will help, and information
about the species' natural habitat).
Students will be evaluated in this lesson by how well they contribute and perform the assigned activities within their small group. The major areas of evaluation
are:
