Introduction
It's time to suit up ! Grab your scuba gear
and head to the boat. Bring your samples suitcase and your
underwater camera. Your microscope is good too. BEWARE of the
Marine BioInvaders!
We've studied about marine biologists and their
job, now we'll meet some of their researh subjects.
Here's some keywords you need to
know:
| Marine
Bioinvaders |
These tiny organisms are pests that were
hijacked by nasty people on seagoing vessels. |
| Non-indigenous
Species |
Aliens (Species brought in from another region of the
world) |
| Indigenous
Species |
You know, the Natives! |
| Ballast |
The water holding section of a ship. |
Find and explore what Marine Bioinvaders do to the
environment?
The
Task Your task,
should you decide to accept it, is to don your scuba gear and scour the
bodies of water in Louisiana for marine bioinvaders.
What do they do to the
environment? These Marine creatures in mysterious
territory do strange things to the natives!
- How will you divide the work in
your group?
- One person is an
environmentalist.
- One person is a marine
biologist.
- One person is a citizen
activist.
You
will need to:
- locate what species live in the
body of water you select.
- write a story describing how the
marine bioinvader came to Louisiana waters and how it interacted with
the natives.
- create a storyboard for your
story.
- map area you researched via the
internet, and Louisiana GIS CD
The
Process
- 1. First
you'll be assigned a group of 3 students who will do the job selected by
each person.
- 2. Once
you've picked which job you will do. Then type address of a site from
those listed.
- 3. Be
sure you choose one at a time for your special
task.

Hey!!! Here's some *helpful*
hints (hint, hint!): *You might want to create a database
to organize your data. * A spreadsheet is another fabulous
tool! *

Evaluation
Do you want
a good grade? Then meet these guidelines!!!
|
Beginning
1 |
Developing
2 |
Accomplished
3 |
Exemplary
4 |
Score |
|
Creativity
|
Minimal
effort put in to accomplish assignment |
You figured
out what a marker is, but not quite what different colors
are. |
Different
mediums are used, but we can't figure out what it's supposed to
be |
You got the
idea! Your work shows that you've put in considerable thought and
time into making it nice |
|
Ability to problem-solve in
a group
|
You fight
more than two cats |
Sometimes
you can give in, but it still sounds like
WWIII |
You realize
that the world does not revolve around you, so you come up with
ideas to incorporate everyone. some bickering still
occurs |
The Art of
Compromise is mastered |
|
Organization of Data
|
No system
of filing information |
Some
organization, but not enough to utilitze
information |
Information
has a good system, but is hard to find |
Information
is highly organized and easily accessible |
|
Presentation to Class
|
If you just
stand there and read your notes.....expect a low
grade. |
You know
your stuff, but it's still boring! |
You got
some good ideas going, but it could use some
polishing. |
Your
presentation brought life to the room! |
|
Accuracy of
Map |
You made a
map, but the details are off |
The major
details are presented but it looks like something a kindergartener
would do |
This map
shows the important things with a few minor details, but it's still
in need of a legend |
Wow! Your
map has the detail that would make a map-maker
melt! |
|
Conclusion
Whew! The adventure is over! Have
you learned the specifics of the marine invaders in the body of water you
chose? Have you been amazed by the diffferent creatures living in
the waters? Do you now have an understanding of how to effectively
organize data? Can you use the information you learned to teach
others? Hope your adventure was enjoyable, now be sure and put your
scuba gear back in its place!
