Introduction

Hey! I am sure you have heard of France and its capital city Paris. Well, do you want to go to Paris? Let's  learn about landmarks and  monuments, the subway and French money. Which landmarks or monuments would you like to visit? How will you get there?

http://paris.org/Monuments/Eiffel/info.html

The Task

You are planning a trip to Paris with your classmates. You participate in Internet-based activities that will help you get familiar with Paris. You will learn about landmarks and  monuments, the subway and French money. At the end you will decide which landmarks and monuments you want to visit, how to get there and how much it costs in French francs and dollars. You will present your final work using Hyperstudio.

The Process
Before you start, make groups of 3 or 4 students. All the assignments will be completed in groups.
Step 1: Go to http://paris.org/Monuments/
Answer the following questions and share the answers with the rest of the class, using PowerPoint. Each monument mentioned must be illustrated by a picture. Attention! You may not use any of the pictures that I have used in this Web Quest. You can either draw pictures and scan them (encouraged) or surf the Web to find other pictures (you can also find pictures in the school library or in the various encyclopedias available on CD-ROM in this classroom). On the last slide of your presentation, explain what each  member of the group did. Make sure that the work load is divided as evenly as possible. Your presentation will be shared with the rest of the class. Choose a speaker.

1. In what year was the Arc de Triomphe finished?
2. What do you find under de Arc de Triomphe?
3. Name one favmous painting found in the Louvre Museum.
4. When did the construction of Notre-Dame start?
5. What does Sacre Coeur mean?
6. Who designed the Eiffel Tower?
7. What building surrounds the Sainte Chapelle?

Step 2: Now that you know some information about some of Paris' famous landmarks and monuments, find out how much it costs (if anything) to visit them. To do so, go back to  http://paris.org/Monuments/and find the information needed. You have to give all the prices mentioned (entrance fees vary according to ages). Present all the entrance fees  on an Excel spreadsheet.
ATTENTION : all prices you report have to be in French Francs and in Dollars. Go to http://www.travlang.com/money/ to find out what the currency exchange rate is and to convert French Francs into dollars. As always, make sure that the work load is divided as evenly as possible. Choose a speaker to present your findings to the class. The speaker must be another person than the speaker for step 1.

Step 3: Now that you know how much it will cost you to visit the landmarks and monuments, don't you think it would be great to find out how to get there? The only means of transportation that you will use in Paris is the Metro (the subway).
http://www.paris.org/Metro/

First,  click here to see a metro map of Paris. Look at all the different metro lines. See where they start and where they end. Ready? Let's practice: Imagine that you are at the Porte de Clignancourt (1st station on line 4) subway station. You want to go to the Eiffel Tower. What do you do?  Take a few seconds to think.
This is one of the ways to get to the Eiffel Tower: Take Line 4 direction Porte d' Orleans. Get off at Saint-Michel then take line C direction Meudon Val-Fleury and get off at Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel.  Easy, right?
Well, now it is your turn. Write your answers using any word processing software. ATTENTION, WRITE YOUR ANSWERS IN FRENCH.

1.You are at Charonne (line 9) and want to go to the Arc de Triomphe. What do you do?
2. You are in Plaisance (line 13) and want to go to the Louvre museum. What do you do?
3. You are in Place Monge (line 7) and want to go to the Eiffel Tower. What do you do?
4. You are at Alma-Marceau (line 9) and want to go to Notre-Dame. What do you do?
5. You are at Richard-Lenoir (line 5) and want to go to Sainte Chapelle. What do you do?
6. You are at Couronnes (line 2) and want to go to the Sacre Coeur. What do you do?

Step 4:

You are now ready to work on the final assignment of this WebQuest. This is the assignment that will determine your grade (see Evaluation).  As stated in the TASK, decide which landmarks and monuments you want to visit (AT LEAST 4), how to get there  (you decide from where) and how much it costs to get in in French francs and dollars. You will present your final work using Hyperstudio.
Tip: you can insert your spreadsheet (see Step 2) in your Hyperstudio presentation. This will take care of the "how much it costs"  part.
Extra Credit:You will receive extra credit if you decide to visit  landmarks or monuments that are NOT in the MUST SEE section of  http://paris.org/Monuments/.Feel free to surf the Web to find other monuments and landmarks.

You will  share your work with the rest of the class. Choose a speaker (it must be someone who has not been a speaker yet).
On the last card of your task, explain what each  member of the group did.
