Lesson Overview

This lesson was designed to have students explore a wild animal and to find out as much about this animal as possible.  In this lesson students will use the internet to search for information on their animal of choice and then to prepare a Power Point presentation once they have collected all of their information.  This lesson will hopefully make the students aware of problems animals in the wild face everyday and why it is so important to continue conservation efforts already in progress.  This lesson will also give them the opportunity to connect with nature if they already haven't.

Student Characteristics

This lesson will be for students in grades 6-8 taking a course in Ecology.  The students taking this course have elected to take this course because they like nature and topics that are connected to all aspects of nature.  We are focusing on wild animals in this lesson and the problems they may face on a daily basis.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to describe their animal and the habitat in which that animal lives.
Students will be able to navigate the internet to find information needed.
Students will be able to put together information in order to create a Power Point presentation.

Time

This lesson will be done in five class periods lasting one hour each.

Resources and Materials

In order for students to complete this project they will need a computer with access to the internet, and the Power Point program to design their final presentations. The following are websites that may be usefull in our search for information:

Activities and Procedures

The lesson will begin with a introduction by the teacher. The teacher will go through the entire procedure with the students so they know exactly how to navigate the web sites and how to save all of the information that will collected. The students will work on this project as an individual but will be able to ask questions of their peers and of the teacher if needed.  This assignment will take five class periods each lasting one hour.  All of the data and final presentation will need to be done in class during class time.  At the end of the fifth class period the Power Point presentation will need to be complete and turned into the teacher on a zip disk. During the next class period the students will take turns showing their work to the class.  This may take more than one class period to complete.

Variations

This project could be done in groups in the teacher wanted.

Assessment

How will you know you are doing a good job?  I want you to collect the information that you think is important about you animal.  You all know how to use Power Point so be creative.  I will be looking: to make sure you give accurate information, to see if you have all of the words spelled right, to see how creative you have been and that you turned you wotrk in on time.  The final presentation should be fun and I don't want you to be nervous about how you talk in front of the class, you will get better at that the more you do it so relax and have FUN!
