IntroductionThe following lesson is for third or fourth grade students and covers nutrition and problem solving techniques. The students should have some knowledge of the programs that will be used for the activities related to the lesson.Lesson Overview
The lesson incorporates math problem solving and nutrition through the activities. the lesson will teach about the benefits of eating healthy both through living and cost of food. The students will use a spreadsheet, Kidpix, and Kidspiration for the activities involved with the lesson.Learning Objectives

4. The students will learn how cost effective eating healthy is.
For this lesson the teacher will need access to computers for the students with Kidpix, Kidspiration, and a spreadsheet program. The students will also need a notebook to keep an eating journal.Activities & Procedures
Activity #1: Food Journal
The students will keep a daily journal of what types of food they ate that day. They should include what food group it is in. The students will enter their data into a spreadsheet at the end of the week and figure out the cost of the healthy food verses the cost of the junk food they ate that week. An example of this can be found below.
Activity #2: Kidspiration
The students will work in groups of 3-4 students and create a concept map for their given food group. The students will place the food group name as their main topic and the sub topics will be pictures of foods with their names that belong to that food group.
Activity #3: Kidpix Slide Show
The students will work in the same groups for the Kidspiration activity to find fun facts on the internet that they can use in their slide show presentation. Each group will be assigned a food group to do make a slide show, containing four slides, about. The slide show should include information about the food group. The group will also have to include a word problem involving a situation about their food group. An example of this is given below.

Assessment
The students will be graded as follows:
Excellent (4pts) Good (3pts) Needs Improvement (2pts) Activity #1: Food Journal & Spreadsheet The student has kept good record of their eating habits for the week and has followed instructions very well for creating his/her spreadsheet. The student has few missing records but has followed directions for making his/her spreadsheet. The student has a lot of missing records and did not follow the directions for making his/her spreadsheet. Activity #2: Kidspiration The students followed directions and placed appropriate pictures according to the food group assigned. The students either did not follow directions properly or placed inappropriate pictures according to their assigned food group. The students did not follow directions and did not use appropriate pictures for their assigned food group. Activity #3: KidPix The students' slide show contains four slides giving adequate information on their assigned food group and a good example of a word problem related to that food group. The students created a slide show with less than four slides. They included little information about the food group and/or they did not have a good example of a word problem related to their food group. The students created a slide show that did not have information about the food group and did not give a god example of a word problem related to the food group
