Treasure Hunt

 

Before you can explore the Internet, you need a working knowledge of "techie" terms.  The following is a list of Internet/Web terms to help you on your journey:

Glossary of Internet/Web Terms

LAN-Local Area Network

A group of computers connected together within a geographical location.

WAN-Wide Area Network

Two or more LANs connected.

Internet also the Net

All the WANs in the world.

WWW-World Wide Web also the Web

A system of accessing information on the Internet.

Website also Site

A place where information is collected and made accessible to people on the Internet using the Web.

URL-Uniform resource locator

The location of a document or piece of information. A URL looks like this:

http://www.yahoo.com

Hyper Link also Link

Something on a website that you can click on which will send you to another website or location. It is usually in the form of underlined text or an image.

Home Page

The top level of information on a website.

Hypertext

Interactive text. You can click on the text to change locations.

HTTP-Hypertext transfer protocol

Included as part of a URL address. A network protocol which allows computers to "talk to one another"

HTML-Hypertext markup language

The language with which you write hypertext documents for the web.

Browser

The interface you use to access the Web. The most popular are Netscape and Explorer.
